How serious is MRSA?

I have a pilonidal cyst and will be having surgery on it soon. Unfortunately i now have MRSA and was curious how serious it can get. I had the cyst cut open relatively a month ago and it has almost closed up completely (we are trying to keep the opening open) but now i have two infections very close to my opening (which is still being packed) and also i have one on my right side. I don't know a whole lot about this infection or how serious it can be so a little help would be great.
Answer:
I am a nursing student.
MRSA, or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas, (commonly called "staph"), is a bacterial infection that is very serious. How serious? It can kill you.
Bacterial infections are normally treated with antibiotics which kill the germs(microbes) that cause the infection.
Some microbes can change their genetic structures and this makes them more difficult to kill. They can survive in the presence of antibiotics. MRSA is one of these.
Staph bacteria are normally found in the body in your nose and on your skin. When these bacteria enter other places in the body, they can cause serious wound infections and pneumonia. MRSA is resistant to methicillin, a common type of penicillin. Typically, this infection takes months to treat, and multiple antibiotics are often used due to MRSA's aggressive nature.
As a nursing student, I have seen patients hospitalized with MRSA many times. It is not always treated successfully. Please follow your physician's instructions diligently. I wish you a speedy recovery from your surgery. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
There is current groundbreaking research being done to develop a MRSA vaccine that would prevent these dangerous infections in the future.
MRSA is the same bacteral that causes staph infections except it is immune to more antibiotics. You need to follow a doctors instructions on how to treat your wound and the infection. Wash hands! Wash hands! Wash hands!
